A Guide to the National Archives of Ireland
The National Archives was created in 1988 by merging the State Paper Office (created in 1702) and the Public Record Office of Ireland (created in 1867). Almost all the records acquired by the Public Record Office of Ireland before 1922 were destroyed by fire at the beginning of the Civil War in June 1922 and as a result, the material now held by the National Archives dates mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. The National Archives of Ireland holds many of the records which are relevant to Irish genealogy and local history. Records at the National Archives include Church of Ireland parish records, gravestone inscriptions, census returns for 1901 and 1911, probate records, deeds, tithe applotment books, Griffith's valuation, school records, convict transportation records and other historical and genealogical sources.
Although the staff of the National Archives will assist you in finding any relevant records in their custody, they cannot undertake research on your behalf.

National Archives Online Catalogue
Welcome to the online catalogue of the National Archives where you can access descriptions of catalogued archival material. The majority of the descriptions in the catalogue consist of records of government departments and the courts and represent a selection of our holdings. Those records which are not yet in the catalogue can be accessed using the hardcopy finding aids in our Reading Room. National Archives of Ireland > Search the archives
