Land Registry ...

Role of Land Registry. The Land Registry is the State authority responsible for the registration of property transactions in Ireland. The Registry was originally established in 1892 to provide a system of registration of title and ownership to land, which would be comprehensive and readily accessible. When the title to a piece of property is registered in the Land Registry, that title is guaranteed by the Registry on behalf of the State and the guarantee is underpinned by a statutory scheme of compensation for any loss arising from errors originating in the Registry. There are 2 separate systems for recording property transactions:

  • The registration of title system (Land Registry) which provides a State-guaranteed title to property and
  • The registration of deeds system (Registry of Deeds) which records the existence of deeds and conveyances affecting property

A title is the ownership of a property and a deed is a written document that affects property. Citizens Information
